Empower Minds Tanzania Engages Students at Mivinjeni High School
Date: October 2026
Location: Mivinjeni High School, Tanzania
Activity: School Mental Health Awareness and Student Engagement
Organized by: Empower Minds Tanzania
Overview
Empower Minds Tanzania had the opportunity to visit Mivinjeni High School and engage with students in an important conversation about mental health, emotional well-being, self-awareness, and resilience.
The session created an open and supportive environment where students were encouraged to reflect on their emotional well-being, understand some of the challenges young people may experience, and recognize the importance of talking to trusted people and seeking support when needed.
For Empower Minds Tanzania, school engagement is an important part of our commitment to making mental health education more accessible to young people. Schools provide an important setting for reaching adolescents at a stage of life where they are developing their identity, relationships, coping skills, and understanding of themselves and others.
Key Areas of Engagement
During the session, students were encouraged to explore:
* Understanding and taking care of their mental and emotional well-being.
* Recognizing emotions and expressing them in healthy ways.
* Building self-awareness and positive coping skills.
* Understanding that experiencing emotional challenges does not mean that someone is weak.
* The importance of talking to trusted adults, teachers, peers, or other appropriate support systems.
* Challenging stigma and misconceptions surrounding mental health.
* Creating a culture where young people feel safe to speak, listen, and support one another.
Impact
The visit contributed to creating greater awareness and openness around mental health among students and provided an opportunity for young people to engage in conversations that are often difficult to initiate.
More importantly, the session reinforced the message that mental health is an essential part of overall well-being and that seeking help should be viewed as a strength rather than a weakness.
By bringing mental health conversations directly into the school environment, Empower Minds Tanzania is working to:
🧠 Increase mental health awareness
Help students develop a better understanding of mental health and emotional well-being.
💬 Encourage open conversations
Create an environment where young people feel more comfortable talking about emotions, challenges, and experiences.
🌱 Build resilience
Introduce young people to healthy ways of managing challenges and developing emotional resilience.
🤝 Reduce stigma
Challenge harmful misconceptions that may prevent young people from seeking support.
🏫 Strengthen school-based support
Encourage collaboration between students, teachers, school leadership, families, and community organizations in promoting student well-being.
Looking Ahead
The Mivinjeni High School visit is part of Empower Minds Tanzania’s broader commitment to strengthening school-based mental health awareness and support.
We recognize that one conversation cannot address every challenge a young person may face. Sustainable change requires continued engagement, trusted support systems, mental health education, and collaboration with schools and communities.
Empower Minds Tanzania therefore looks forward to continuing to work with schools to create environments where students can learn, speak openly, seek support, and thrive.
We extend our sincere appreciation to the school leadership, teachers, and students of Mivinjeni High School for welcoming Empower Minds Tanzania and participating in this important conversation.
Every young person deserves to be heard, supported, and empowered to take care of their mental well-being.
